Bark for Me: The Rise of a Strange Cosplay Phenomenon

What is Bark for Me?

Bark for Me refers to social media requests made by cosplayers of Chainsaw Man character Makima and sometimes other characters in which they ask viewers to "bark" for them. The trend began in March 2021, when cosplayers and e-girls on Twitter and other social media platforms started posting photographs of themselves in Makima cosplay, accompanied by captions requesting viewers to bark.

The Origins of Bark for Me

The request to bark stems from the anime and manga series Chainsaw Man, in which Makima frequently refers to the protagonist, Denji, as her "dog" and treats him like a pet. Denji reciprocates this behavior, often referring to Makima as his "master." This dynamic has led to a number of cosplay skits in which Makima and Denji engage in playful banter, with Makima demanding that Denji bark for her.

The Bark for Me trend has since spread beyond Chainsaw Man cosplay, with cosplayers of other characters, such as Power and Reze, also participating. The trend has become so popular that it has even been featured in mainstream media outlets, including Kotaku and Polygon.
